What is Prostate?

It is an apricot-sized gland found in males, located between the bladder and the penis. This gland is present just in front of the rectum. The size of this gland measures 20 to 30 grams, urethera run through the center of the prostate from the bladder to the penis that passes out urine from the body.

This gland secretes a fluid that protects the sperm. During ejaculation, this gland gets contracted and through its fluid enters into the urethra. An enlargement in this gland is called as Prostatomegaly. It usually occursin older men.

Prostate enlargement is also called benign prostatic hyperplasia. Now we will discuss Prostatomegaly in detail as per Ayurvedic perspective: In Ayurveda, prostate gland is named as “Paurush granthi”.

These two shlokas of “Shushruta Samhita” utartantram explains that when apan vayu is in between the rectum and bladder, it gives rise to an increase in the prostate that is stable and enlarged in size. The enlargement of the prostate cause’s suppression, distention of the urine, Vata, and pain in the bladder. This type of disease is known as “vataashtheela” or “mutraastheela” (enlargement of the prostate gland).

As Per Ayurveda BPH (Enlarged Prostate)

Vayu dosha creates an obstruction in the urinary bladder and anal region that blows them to produce protruded and a stony mass mobile. These all cause painful condition and obstruction in the passage of urine and feces.

This enlargement mostly occurs at the age of 40-50 years. In allopathic, most of the surgeons recommend surgery for this problem.

  • Retention in the urine.
  • Inability to empty the bladder completely that gives a feeling of urine urge many times.
  • Urinating at night time in shorter voiding intervals(nocturia).

  • The Urinary bladder doesn’t get empty fully. The urine left in the bladder gives birth to various bacteria.

Ayurvedic Treatment for an Enlarged Prostate

In Ayurveda, there are many combinations of herbs that give a good result in the enlarged prostate condition. The herbs like Punarnava, Gokshur, Harad, Kanchnaar etc are beneficial in this condition. So here we are discussing a few herbal medicines

1. Kanchnaar Guggul

These are classical herbal tablets that have been in use since ancient times. The tablets give good results in the enlargement of any gland, tumors, cysts, and boils. Kanchnaar guggul tablets are prepared from various herbs and kanchnaar is the main one along with guggul. The size of the prostate gland reduces with the regular use of these tablets.

Dosage – One tablet thrice daily with plain water after meals.

2. Chanderprabha Vati

All the herbal ingredients are used for its preparation. These are classical herbal tablets used since ancient times for all types of urine problems hence gives effective results in Prostatomegaly.

Dosage – One tablet thrice daily with plain water after meals.

3. Shvet Parpati

This is a classical Ayurvedic herbal product that gives good result in urinary disorders, prostatomegaly, kidney stones, dysuria, urinary tract infections, oliguria etc. The main property of this herbal medicine is that it increases the production of urine and sweat.

Dosage – Take 125mg – 250 mg once or twice daily.

4. Vridhivadhika Vati

This is an herbal mineral preparation that is used since ancient times. It mainly acts on vata dosha and as per Ayurveda, the enlargement of the prostate is due to Vatadosha only. These tablets also reduce excess kapha from the body. The ingredients used in the preparation of these vatiare shuddhaparad, shuddhagandhak, vangabhasma, tamrabhasma, tamrabhasma, hartalbhasma, shankhbhasma, sonth (Zingiberofficinale), Haritaki (Terminaliachebula), Amalaki (Emblicaofficinalis) etc.

Dosage – One tablet at night time with plain water.

Home Remedies for Enlarged Prostate Problems That You Can Do Easily

  • For increasing strength of prostate gland, take two dry dates andboil them in a glass of pure cow milk. Drink this glass of milk and chewremaining dates daily.
  • Take one yellow fruit Harad (Terminaliachebula) thatshouldnot be so big or small in size. Cut this into two pieces along with seed put it in a pottery or glass vessel. Add water in this vessel and soak this for 12 to 14 hours. Let it soak down until the whole fruit got swelled. In the morning when the fruit gets fully swelled remove the seed, chew the fruit and eat slowly. Drink the remaining water. Follow this home remedy atleast for one to two months. By doing thisremedy, you will see amazing results.
  • Take 10 grams of Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris) herb powder in 125 ml of water. Strain this mixtureanddon’t add sugar to it and take thispowder after 15 min of taking the above harad remedy, take this mixture daily until your excess urination problem gets resolved completely.
  • These two home remedies are bitter so pleasedon’t add any artificial sugar in it for making your taste better.
  • Drink bottle-gourd juice by adding five leaves of Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) and five Black pepper (Piper nigrum). Have this mixture early in the morning on an empty stomach.
  • The home remedies will cure your enlarged prostate problem easily.

Some of The Important Tips That Will Help You in an Enlarged Prostate Problem

  1. Always eat healthy and well-balanced diet. Avoid spicy and junk food items.
  2. Include green veggies, fresh fruits, whole grains, grams etc in your daily diet.
  3. Perform kapalbhati and anulomvilompranayam for 30 minutes each.
  4. Strictly follow the diet and pranayama techniques.
  5. In daytime, increase the amount of water intake. Drink plenty of water.
  6. At night time drink less amount of water.
  7. Drink water in the sitting posture and take sips slowly.
  8. Avoid drinking tea, spicy food, sour food items, raisins etc.
  9. Instead of taking tea, you can drink herbal tea that also helps in detoxification of the body.
  10. Always use Indian toilets and pass urine in a sitting posture. Avoid western toilets and don’t pass urine in standing posture because it accumulates a few of the urine in urinary bladder that may cause bacterial growth.
