The signs and symptoms of Tourette syndrome are uncontrolled and frequent eye blinking, grimacing to head jerking, foot stomping, throat clearing, repeated sniffing, shouting, yelping, or making clicking sounds.

Many patients with Tourette syndrome may have other conditions like obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety, learning disabilities, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

How Many Tics are Associated with Tourette Syndrome?

There are two types of tics that are associated with Tourette syndrome

1. Motor Tics

In this type certain symptoms appear like grimacing, head jerking, eye blinking, shoulder shrugging, arms jerking.

It is further divided into two types

  • Simple motor tics: that shows blinking of eyes or grimacing.
  • Complex motor tics: that involves more group of muscles in rare cases head banging may also be present

2. Vocal Tics

In this type a person use to repeat doing sniffing, humming, and throat clearing.

It is further divided into two types

  • Simple vocal tics: that causes sniffing, grunting, or throat clearing
  • Complex vocal tics: it can involve involuntary swearing, and echolalia.

The exact cause of this syndrome is unknown as it is a complex disorder caused by genetic and environmental factors.

Diagnosis of Tourette Syndrome

Its symptoms will guide you better. No blood tests, imaging tests, or laboratory tests are needed. But in rare cases, CT scans, MRI, EEG, or certain blood tests are required for ruling out other similar disorders.

This shloka says that imbalanced Vata dosha causes paralysis of the right and left a portion of the body. It further causes a problem in body movements, pain in the body, and voice problem.

According to Ayurveda, it can be correlated to paralysis. Mainly Vata dosha is responsible for this syndrome. As per Ayurveda Vata (vyan vayu) is the main dosha responsible for this syndrome.

युगपत सर्वतोअज्रस्म देहे विक्षिप्यतेकर्मणा। (च। चि १५ /३६)

In this shloka the vayan vayu is responsible for all the functions of the limbs like flexion and extension. All the movements of the limbs and neuro muscular coordination is done by this vayu.
